Calder
boasts a number of high profile characters on National Audax
scene, notably Ray Smith, who until recently ran financial aspects of Audax UK and Pete Ralph who is the events secretary of the CTC West Yorkshire DA and well known nationally in Audax circles. Ray and Pete are very accomplished Audax riders, both having done the legendary Paris-Brest-Paris 1400km ride,the pinacle of achievement in the sport. Dave Smithers, better known as the club TT timekeeper is also very active with many prodigious rides under is belt. Several other riders take part in Audax inYorkshre and Derbyshire which are well served with good fixtures over distances from 100 to 600k held annually. Notable classics are the 200k 'Illy Imperial on the North York Moors, the 600k '3 Coasts which goes from near Halifax to both the East and West Coasts of England, the 3rd coast being the 'shores' of Hollingworth Lake near Rochdale. There is also a summer long series of 100k very hilly events ithe Peak District known as the summer 'Grimpeur series. Overall average speeds are normally restricted to between 15 and 30k per hour. |
