C 2 C June 2010. Photographs by Peter Gillot.

Martin Price and Matthew Dodworth, seen left with Roker
Lighthouse and Pier in the background just before leaving
Sunderland, Westbound for Whitehaven on the 140 mile C2C
cycle route.

IAhead of them, was the climb up Weardale before lumpy roads
to AllenHeads and the High Pennine crosssing which included the
major climbs of the aptly named Killhope Cross, Alston Moor and
Hartside. After Penrith, they rode below the huge flanks of
Blencathra and Skiddaw before the long climb over Winlatter Pass
before the descent to the Cumbrian Coast. Despite all this, the
pair completed the ride in just over 9 hours.

Excellent support was provided by Peter Gillot who rode the C2C
with Martin last year.
                                                              2010 Route

Pensive looks from Mat and Martin at Sunderland. Martin dubbed this photograph "waiting for the men in White Coats to take them away"
Matthew Dodworth ......climbing Martin Price........ more climbing
Matthew leading Martin up the 2056 feet, half mile Killhope Cross climb which has a steepest section of 20%. The climb from the
Weardale valley starts from the Killhope and climbs in one section up to the summit at 2056 ft. The steep 1 in 5 section towards
the summit can be very testing in poor weather conditions. This is the highest classified road in England
The Climb of Alston Moor. Height:1495 ft Length: 3 miles Steepest section: 1 in10. A long climb over the Alston hills to the head of the upper Tees Valley
Leaving Durham at the top of Alstom Moor

Pleased to be at the Summit of the seminal Hartside climb up onto the roof of the Pennines. From here it's downhill to the Eden Valley and Penrith

The climb proper starts in Melmerby on the main Penrith-Alston road, at 156m, climbing steadily to the Hartside cafe high up at 1893 feet. The climb affords the riders their first view ,through the trees lower down, across to the Lake District fells. The summit does not come into view until the last 2km or so, and there is a final 180 degree hairpin before the final ramp to the summit. Total ascent: 424m Distance: 5miles, Average gradient: 5.3%

Mat takes a break on Whinlatter Pass which takes the route through Whinlatter forest with magnificent views from the top. It's a 2 mile climb,
but described as a legbreaker
