Unusually, there was a troublesome headwind on the 1000 metre 1 in 6 climb up to picturesque Woolley Edge, otherwise the winning time would probably have been under 3 minutes. Drighlington's I Galbraith came closest to the Huddersfield RC rider with 3.16.07 just 3 seconds quicker than defending champion Digby Rusling. Digby was fastest of the Calder riders and took the club championship. Martin Price, a first timer on the course turned in an excellent ride for such a big man, as did P Kirk of Bob Jackson RT, another rider with a rouleur's frame and Dawn Hartley, the only woman in the field looked impressive with an excellent 4.17.08.
