1961
wa a good year for Alan Malone who broke the course
record for the Sheffield Phoenix 25 mile TT with 58.14 beating
the record of 58.40 set four years earlier by Tom Simpson
ridng for Scala Wheelers before he moved to Belgium.
The Sheffield Phoenix event, which has run unbroken
continuously since 1927 has a winners list which reads
like a who'se who of Cycling.
Other winners include 1930's legend H (Shake) Earnshaw
of Monckton Wheeler's, Tour De France rider Brian Haskell,
National Champion Bernard Breedon from Askern, and 25 TT
Competition Reord Holder Dave Dungworth and current TT
and Audax star Gethin Butler.
1991 winner is Mike McNamara who was famously offered
a sweet by Beryl Burton when she caught him in the National
12 hour TT championships - Mike won the men's race.
Also included are all the winners from clubs in Wakefield Met
apart from Alan Malone and Shake Earnshaw. |
